The Devil Visits Llandewi Breffi

£85.00

Not long ago I came across a custom in Cardiganshire, where some women, eager for power, sold themselves to the Father of Lies in exchange for hidden knowledge and dark strength.

The particular tale I found, recorded in the early 1800s, is as follows:

Two elderly women attended morning service at Llanddewi Brefi Church and partook of Holy Communion. But instead of eating the sacred bread like the other communicants, they kept it in their mouths and slipped outside. They then walked around the church nine times, and at the ninth circuit the Evil One himself appeared from the church wall in the form of a frog 🐸. To him they gave the bread from their mouths. By this unholy act, they were said to have sold themselves to Satan and entered into his service as witches.
