There’s something about the way men dressed then, a full three piece suit to go down the mines in.


In the 19th and early 20th centuries, specialised industrial clothing barely existed. Men owned very few clothes, often just one suit. You worked in what you had.

The idea of changing into overalls, lockers, pithead baths, and clean/dirty divides really only became common after the First World War. Before that, men often walked home in the same clothes they worked in.
