Home is the first of three prints accepted into Mini Print Cymru | Wales, showing at Mission Gallery, Swansea (November 2025–January 2026) and Royal Cambrian Academy, Conwy (March–April 2026). This small format—100mm x 100mm—demanded a different approach, distilling complex themes into intimate compositions.

Together, these three prints (Home, Commute and Work)will tell a story of working life during the Industrial Revolution, holding up a mirror to our everyday lives now and revealing how the fundamental rhythms of life haven’t really changed.

The Daily Rhythm

This particular piece reflects on home life during the industrial era, exploring both refuge and harsh reality. Families then, as now, passed through the same doorways: leaving for the day’s work or returning at its end. It’s a timeless rhythm that connects us across generations.

I spent time researching the domestic realities of industrial Wales, uncovering statistics that shaped how I approached this print. In places like Merthyr Tydfil, hardship was constant. In 1866, the average age at death there was just 17.5 years, with over 60% of burials children under five. Home was both sanctuary and reminder of life’s fragility.

The Print

Working at this smaller scale presented its own challenges and possibilities. The composition focuses on that familiar moment of transition, the threshold between home and work, private and public, safety and struggle.

Despite the harsh historical context, the print captures something universal: the daily routine of leaving home for work or returning to loved ones. These are the rhythms that define working life, whether in 1866 or 2025.

The research process for this series revealed how industrial communities created meaning and continuity despite incredible hardship. Home wasn’t just a physical space, it was where families held together against the pressures of industrial life.
