Sleeping Siren

Immerse yourself in the dreamlike world of the Sleeping Siren, a striking black-and-white linocut print inspired by Welsh folklore and surreal beauty. This handmade artwork captures the essence of mystery and tranquility, featuring a serene figure with flowing, ethereal energy.

In 1826 near Aberystwyth, a farmer spotted a woman at sea, far beyond where any swimmer could be. He watched her for 30 minutes(!)—pale-skinned, dark-haired, and with the tail of a creature not meant for land—before rushing to fetch his family.
— Davies, Jonathan Ceredig. Folk-lore of West and Mid-Wales (143-147)

Welsh folklore tells of mermaids seen along the coast, figures drifting between myth and reality. Fishermen spoke of eerie, human-like shapes in the waves—sometimes guiding lost boats, sometimes pulling them toward danger. Some were omens of storms, others spirits of the sea itself.

Carved and printed by hand, this piece captures that presence, with rough textures and bold contrasts giving her a ghostly, dreamlike feel.
